What are stems — and why do they make practicing easier?

A finished song is a mix of many tracks combined into one stereo file. Stems are exactly those individual tracks before they’re combined: drums, bass, vocals, and the remaining instruments — each as its own audio file.

Why this is gold for practicing

  • Play along: mute the guitar and play its part yourself — over the original playback.
  • Pick out parts by ear: solo the bass to transcribe a line note by note.
  • Focus: play only drums + bass to train timing and groove.

In our practice player, you upload your stems and get a volume fader, mute, and solo for each track — all perfectly in sync. Combined with slow-down and loop, that becomes your personal practice room.

Try it yourself.
